IPTV VLAN explained: do you need it?
What the IPTV or VLAN setting on your router does, when it is needed (ISP TV boxes) and why internet IPTV apps do not need it. Plain-English explainer.

Quick answer
An IPTV VLAN is a separate lane on your ISP connection used by some internet providers to deliver their own TV service to their set-top box. You only need to configure it if your ISP provides TV that way. IPTV apps over the internet, like IPTV Trends, do not use a VLAN.
Router menus with "IPTV", "VLAN ID" and "IGMP proxy" confuse a lot of people. They exist for one specific setup.
What it is
Some ISPs deliver their own TV channels over a separate virtual network (VLAN) on your fibre or DSL line. Their TV box must be on that VLAN, so the router has settings to tag a port for it.
Do you need it?
| Your TV service | VLAN needed? |
|---|---|
| ISP TV with the ISP's set-top box | Often yes, follow ISP instructions |
| IPTV app on a stick, TV or phone | No |
When it causes problems
If someone set a port to the ISP TV VLAN, a device plugged into that port may get no internet. Use another port or reset the IPTV port setting.
