IPTV on Roku: what works and the easiest alternative

Can you watch IPTV on Roku? Why the usual IPTV apps are missing, the workarounds (playlist players, mirroring) and the simple $30 fix most people choose.

IPTV on Roku: What Works and the Easiest Alternative

Quick answer

Roku does not carry the standard IPTV player apps such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters, so IPTV on Roku is limited. You can try a playlist player from the Roku store or mirror your phone, but the easiest reliable fix is to plug an inexpensive Fire TV Stick into the Roku TV's HDMI port and use a full IPTV player with a TV guide.

Roku is one of the most popular TV platforms in North America, and one of the least friendly to IPTV. Here is what actually works.

Why IPTV is hard on Roku

Roku runs a closed system: apps must come from its own store, and the full IPTV players most services recommend are not available there. That leaves a few workarounds, each with limits.

Your options

OptionHowLimits
Playlist player from the Roku storeLoad an M3U playlist linkBasic, often no proper TV guide
Screen mirroringMirror a phone or laptop to the RokuPhone must stay on; lower quality
Fire TV Stick in the HDMI portUse TiviMate or IPTV SmartersOne extra device (about $30)

The easiest fix: add a stick

A Roku TV is still a normal TV with HDMI ports. Plug in a Fire TV Stick, switch input, and you get the full IPTV experience: fast zapping, favourites and a proper programme guide. Setup guide: IPTV Trends Firestick guide. Choosing a device: IPTV box buying guide.

If you want to try mirroring

  1. On the Roku, enable screen mirroring in Settings, System.
  2. On an Android phone, use the Cast or Smart View option; on Windows, use the Connect / Cast menu.
  3. Play IPTV in your phone or PC player and keep the device awake.

It works for an occasional programme, but it is not comfortable for everyday viewing.

If you want to try a playlist player

Use your M3U link (not the Xtream login): see M3U vs Xtream Codes. Expect a simple channel list rather than a full guide.

IPTV for Roku: questions and answers

Only in a limited way, with a playlist player or screen mirroring. A Fire TV Stick in the Roku TV's HDMI port is the easiest fix.

The full IPTV players are not in the Roku store.

Add a Fire TV Stick, typically about $30.

Yes for occasional viewing, but the phone must stay on and quality can drop.
