How to run an IPTV speed test the right way

Test your internet speed for IPTV properly: on the TV device, at viewing time, with the right app. How to read the results and what numbers you need.

How to Run an IPTV Speed Test the Right Way

Quick answer

Run the speed test on the streaming device itself (Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV), at the time you usually watch, with nothing else downloading. Look at download speed and consistency: aim for at least 10 Mbps per HD stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream, with no big drops between runs.

A test on your phone next to the router tells you little about the TV two rooms away. Test where the stream plays.

How to test

  1. Install a speed test app on the TV device (many are free in each app store), or open a speed test site in the device browser.
  2. Test at your normal viewing time, for example a Saturday evening.
  3. Run it three times and note the lowest result.
  4. Repeat with the device on Ethernet if possible to compare.

Reading the result

  • Download: the main number for IPTV.
  • Consistency: big swings mean Wi-Fi or congestion problems.
  • Ping: matters little for TV.

Targets per stream: IPTV internet speed required.

On the TV device itself, at viewing time, several times.

At least 10 Mbps per HD stream and 25 Mbps per 4K stream, steady.

Not much; download speed and stability matter more.
