IPTV audio out of sync? How to fix lip sync delay

IPTV sound out of sync with the picture? Fix lip sync delay on Fire TV, Android TV and Smart TVs: change audio output, decoder, AV sync and soundbar settings.

IPTV Audio Out of Sync? How to Fix Lip Sync Delay

Quick answer

IPTV audio out of sync is usually fixed by switching the player between hardware and software decoding, changing the device audio output from Dolby Digital or passthrough to PCM or stereo, and adjusting AV sync or audio delay on the device, TV or soundbar. If only one channel is affected, the delay is in that stream and should be reported to your provider.

First: one channel or every channel?

If the sound drifts on a single channel only, the delay is usually in that broadcast stream: try another channel and report it to your provider. If every channel and app is affected, the cause is in your device, player or sound system, and the steps below fix it.

1. Change the player decoder

In your player settings, switch between hardware (HW) and software (SW) decoding and test again. In IPTV Smarters this is under Settings, Player selection; in TiviMate under Settings, Player.

2. Change the audio output format

  • Fire TV: Settings, Display & Sounds, Audio, Dolby Digital Output: try "Dolby Digital Plus Off" or PCM / stereo.
  • Android TV / Google TV: Settings, Display & Sound (or Sound), Audio output or Surround sound: try Stereo or PCM.
  • Smart TV apps: in the TV sound settings, set Digital audio out to PCM.

Passthrough to a soundbar or receiver is a common cause of lip-sync delay, because the external decoder adds processing time.

3. Adjust AV sync or audio delay

  • Newer Fire TV models offer AV Sync Tuning under Display & Sounds, Audio.
  • Many TVs and soundbars have "Lip sync", "AV sync" or "Audio delay" settings: adjust in small steps while watching someone speak.
  • In VLC on a computer, use the audio track synchronisation setting (or the J and K keys) to shift the sound.

4. Turn off heavy TV picture processing

Motion smoothing and similar picture effects delay the picture, which makes the sound seem early. Switch the TV to Game or Low latency mode, or turn off motion smoothing, and the gap often disappears.

5. Try another player

If one app is out of sync and another is not, use the better one: IPTV Smarters, TiviMate and VLC handle audio differently. See the best IPTV player for Firestick.

6. Restart and update

Restart the streaming device, TV and soundbar, and update the player app and device software. Long-running devices sometimes drift until they are restarted.

Quick checklist

  1. One channel or all? Report single channels to your provider.
  2. Switch hardware / software decoding.
  3. Set audio output to PCM or stereo.
  4. Adjust AV sync on the device, TV or soundbar.
  5. Turn off motion smoothing.
  6. Try another player, then restart everything.
