IPTV black screen with sound: causes and fixes

Sound but no picture on IPTV? It is almost always video decoding: switch the decoder, turn off HDR matching, lower resolution or update the app. Step by step.

IPTV Black Screen With Sound: Causes and Fixes

Quick answer

When IPTV plays sound but no picture, the stream is arriving but your device cannot show the video. Switch the player between hardware and software decoding, turn off HDR or frame-rate matching, lower the output resolution, and update the app. If only some channels do it, they may use a codec your device does not support.

Hearing the commentary but seeing nothing is frustrating, but it tells you something useful: the connection and login are fine. The problem is the picture side of the player or device.

Why it happens

  • The channel uses a video format (such as H.265/HEVC) your device decodes badly.
  • The device is switching HDR or frame rate and the TV cannot keep up.
  • The hardware decoder has crashed and needs a restart.

Fixes

  1. Change the decoder.TiviMate: Settings > Playback > Decoder. IPTV Smarters: Settings > Player selection. Try the other option.
  2. Turn off HDR and frame-rate matching on Fire TV, Google TV or Apple TV.
  3. Set the output resolution to 1080p to test.
  4. Restart the device to reset the decoder.
  5. Update the app; new versions fix decoder bugs.
  6. Try a different player on the same device to see if the app is the issue.

Check the HDMI chain

If you use a soundbar or AV receiver between the stick and TV, plug the stick straight into the TV to test. Some older receivers pass sound but block 4K or HDR video.

If none of this helps, message @host4k on Telegram with your device, app, the channel name and the exact error. That lets the team check the server side straight away.
