IPTV setup: the complete guide
Set up IPTV from scratch: choose a device, install a player, enter your login, load the guide, organise channels and tune settings. Links for every device.

Quick answer
IPTV setup takes five steps: choose a device, install a player app, enter your Xtream Codes login (or M3U link), let the guide load, then organise favourites and tune picture, sound and network. Use the device guides below for exact menus.

After setup
Back up your settings (backup IPTV settings) and bookmark IPTV troubleshooting.
Before you start: what you need in front of you
- Your access details: the Xtream Codes server, username and password, plus the M3U link and guide link if your app needs them.
- Your device: switched on, updated and connected to the internet, ideally by cable.
- About 1 GB of free storage on sticks and TVs, for the player and its guide data.
- A phone nearby: many TV apps let you type long addresses with your phone's keyboard.
Step 1: choose the right login type
If your app offers Xtream Codes, use it. It loads the channel list, groups, logos, guide and catch up in one go. Use the M3U link only in apps that do not support Xtream Codes, such as VLC, Kodi, Jellyfin and several smart TV players; in that case also add the guide link. Background: M3U vs Xtream Codes.
Step 2: enter the details without typos
Most failed setups are typing errors. The server address must be exact: http:// at the start, the full host name, and the port number after the colon if one was given. Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive and must not have a space at the end. If your app shows "invalid login", re-type rather than edit, and check whether your phone keyboard added a capital letter or a full stop.
Step 3: the first load
The first time, the player downloads the full channel list and several days of guide data. On a fast box this takes a moment; on a small stick it can take a few minutes. Let it finish before changing settings. If the guide stays empty after the channels appear, refresh the guide once; see IPTV EPG setup.
Step 4: organise the channel list
- Hide the country and category groups you will never watch.
- Add your everyday channels to favourites, in the order you want them.
- Set the app to open on favourites or the last channel watched.
- Lock adult groups with a PIN if children use the TV: IPTV parental control.
Step 5: tune picture, sound and connection
| Area | What to set | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Picture | Device at your TV's real resolution; frame-rate matching on | IPTV picture quality bad |
| Sound | Passthrough off unless your soundbar decodes surround | IPTV soundbar setup |
| Connection | Ethernet for the main TV; 5 GHz Wi-Fi elsewhere | IPTV Ethernet vs WiFi |
| Guide | Update daily; keep 2 to 3 days on small devices | EPG meaning |
Step 6: add the other screens in your home
Repeat the setup on each device. The login is the same everywhere; only the app differs. Remember that your plan counts screens playing at the same time, not devices installed, so a family with a TV in three rooms that watch together needs a 3 device plan.
After setup: keep it running smoothly
- Back up your app settings once everything is arranged: backup IPTV settings.
- Update the player and device software every few weeks.
- Restart the router occasionally if you notice slowdowns.
- Renew a few days before your plan ends so favourites and settings stay in place.
The five most common setup mistakes
- Typing the server without http:// or without the port.
- Using an M3U link in an app that supports Xtream Codes, then wondering why the guide is empty.
- Setting up on a stick with almost no free storage.
- Testing on Wi-Fi two rooms away and blaming the service for buffering.
- Watching on more screens at once than the plan allows.

| Channels load, guide empty | Refresh the guide; with M3U, add the guide link |
| Channels do not play | Switch the player or decoder in the app settings |
| App says "expired" | Check whether the app trial or your plan has ended |
