When to add a stick
Older TVs, Roku and Vizio, or slow app stores: a stick is faster and updated longer: how to watch IPTV on a TV that is not smart.
How to find out which system your TV runs
The system decides everything, and it is not always obvious from the brand. Three quick ways to check:
- Look at the home screen: Google TV, Fire TV, Roku, webOS (LG) and Tizen (Samsung) each have a recognisable layout and name.
- Open Settings > About or Support > About this TV; the system and version are listed.
- Check the box or the model number on the manufacturer's website.
What each system means for IPTV
| System | IPTV apps | How you add your login | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google TV / Android TV | Full choice | On the TV, Xtream Codes | Excellent; same as a Google TV stick |
| Fire TV built in | Full choice via Downloader | On the TV | Very good; watch storage |
| Tizen (Samsung) | Several, varies by year | On the TV or by website upload | Good; some apps need activation |
| webOS (LG) | Several, varies by year | On the TV or by website upload | Good; turn off Quick Start+ |
| VIDAA (Hisense) | Few | Usually website upload | Limited; a stick is often better |
| Roku TV | No full players | Not possible | Add a stick |
| SmartCast (Vizio) | None | Cast or AirPlay only | Add a stick |
TV app or streaming stick?
A TV app saves money and a remote. A stick usually gives a faster guide, more app choice and longer software support, because sticks are replaced more often than TVs and their makers update them for longer. Our rule of thumb: on a TV less than three years old with Google TV, Fire TV, Tizen or webOS, try the TV app first. On older TVs, VIDAA, Roku or Vizio, use a stick from the start.
How website-upload apps work on Samsung and LG
Many smart TV players never ask for your login on the TV. Instead they show a MAC address or device ID. You open the app maker's website on a phone or computer, enter that ID and your M3U link or Xtream Codes details, save, and restart the app on the TV. It sounds roundabout but it avoids typing long addresses with a TV remote. Two things to remember: the activation after the trial is paid to the app maker, and a factory reset or a new TV changes the ID, so you will need to upload again.
TV settings that improve live TV
- Picture mode: Standard, Movie or Filmmaker rather than Vivid.
- Motion smoothing: low for sport, off for news and drama if you dislike the "soap opera" look.
- Sound output: PCM if some channels are silent through a soundbar.
- Power saving: turn off auto power-off so the TV does not switch off during long matches.
- Network: use the Ethernet port on the back; most smart TVs have one.

When the TV app misbehaves
| Problem | Usual cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| App slows down over days | TV memory fills up | Cold restart: hold the remote power button until the TV reboots |
| Old channel list | Cached data | Refresh the playlist; on LG turn off Quick Start+ |
| "Expired" message | App trial ended | Activate the app; your IPTV plan may still be active |
| Silent channels | Surround audio format | Set sound output to PCM |
| Black screen | Decoder or HDR mismatch | IPTV black screen Samsung TV |
Buying a new TV with IPTV in mind
- System: Google TV and Fire TV sets give the widest app choice; Samsung and LG are good but with fewer IPTV apps.
- Ethernet port: almost every TV has one; check it is not limited to 100 Mbps if you plan to watch 4K.
- HDMI ports: at least one that supports 4K and HDCP 2.2 for a stick.
- Storage: more is better for apps with large guides.
- Software support: brands that update their TVs for longer keep IPTV apps working longer.
Using the TV's apps and a stick together
Nothing stops you using both: the TV's built-in apps for everyday streaming and a stick on one HDMI port for IPTV. Most TVs let you rename the HDMI input ("IPTV") and switch with one button. HDMI-CEC lets the TV remote control the stick, so you may not need a second remote at all.
Sound on smart TVs and soundbars
Live channels use several audio formats. If a channel is silent through a soundbar, set the TV's digital audio output to PCM, or turn off passthrough in the IPTV app. If sound drifts out of step with the picture, use the soundbar's or TV's audio delay setting: IPTV audio sync fixes.
Smart TV setup checklist
- System identified and updated.
- IPTV app installed (or a stick connected).
- Login added, on the TV or the app website.
- Ethernet connected; picture and sound modes set.
- Auto power-off disabled for long matches.
